Mobile rubber-tyred electrically operated (MRTEO) hoppers were commissioned at the wharf area of V.O. Chidambaranar Port here on Wednesday by I. Jeyakumar, Chairman, in the presence of S. Natarajan, Deputy Chairman, and M.S. Saifuddin, Managing Director, Seaport Logistics, and Capt. K. Balachandran, Managing Director, Seaport Shipping.
According to a statement from VOC Port, the electrically driven hoppers would facilitate mechanism to suppress dust during grab discharge operations. The hoppers would be operated at berths III and IV for handling bulk cargoes like copper concentrate, coal, sulphur, rock phosphate, lime stone, gypsum, fertilizers and ilmenite.
The project for design, supply, installation and maintenance of eight MRTEO hoppers was awarded to Seapol Shipping, Chennai, on revenue sharing basis. The licensee had executed the project at a cost of Rs. 38.08 crore and would offer the port a revenue share of 22.88%.
The Port Chairman said the objective was to introduce innovative solutions that increased efficiency and reduced environmental impact of bulk ship operations while the same being both technically and economically feasible.
